We put this in our backup's:
QSYS/PRTERRLOG TYPE(*VOLSTAT) VOLTYPE(3590) VOLSTAT(*DLT)

You may want to change the last parameter.  But, this way we can see how 
much gets saved on the average night.  Also, if there are any errors we 
can tell.

This got us into the habit of using different volume id's on every tape. 
Because we could then trap the offending tape cartridge and evaluate 
giving it the old heave ho.

I think this command tells you everything you'll see in STRSST.
