As I have indicated before, you can use my iDate SQL Function from
www.think400.dk/downloads.htm and once it is in a Date Data Type, you
can use MONTH, YEAR, etc to extract any piece of the date. 

SELECT year(idate(EDAT,'*CYMD')) FROM itmrva
