Ok so what is actually "gained" by removing the database product?
Nothing!  And MySQL will run on i5/OS..haven't tried but I'm guessing
you could slap other databases on the i5 and use them as well...so again
I have to ask...what is gained???

Tommy, it appears I am making no progress with you ;)    i5/OS is a
great OS. but not because of SLS and not because DB2 is the only
database it runs.  It is terrific that RPG works so well with an
externally described database.  But there is nothing gained by that
database product being on the same install CD as the RPG compiler.
