I'll defer to Mr. Bolhuis when it comes to the system i's architecture 
and such, but it makes me nervous as well (as I sit an gaze at the 
sprinkler head just above our 520 and next to the patch panel - ugh).
Regardless of that, though, the main reason for sprinklers and not 
something else is the insurance company.  I know that several years ago 
I tried to have the sprinklers in the computer room (System/3 Model 8 so 
probably not as "water repellent" as the i5's that Larry described) with 
Halon or almost anything else.  The insurance company steadfastly 
refused.  Things may have changed since then (it was obviously awhile 
ago), or it may vary by region or insurer.  Anyway, I simply turned off 
the control valve to our area; for all I know it's still turned off.

Server rooms shouldn't have a water based fire extinguishers.
