Are you confusing two different concepts, Charles? This system is very
strong on the ability to continue using programs developed on earlier
versions of the OS on more modern versions. However, when you go
backwards, trying to use current programs on older versions of the OS you
run into the problem of programs expecting features that didn't exist on
earlier versions. Generally, you can compile to the "current version -2"
level, for example V5R3 systems can compile back to V5R1 levels. One of
the limitations in doing this, is that you can't use language enhancements
that were added in V5R2 or V5R3, since they could depend on feature that
aren't available in the V5R1 OS.
What are you doing that you are concerned with saving things for older
versions?

object can be restored to"
field for objects or something to that effect.
But I can't seem to find anything on v5r2 or in the v5r4 infocenter...
Am I losing it or what?

I can't point you to any documentation, but your question got
me curious, and I did a search on our system. We have user
programs created on V1R2 and V2R2 in current use on our
system, currently running V5R3M5.
