Actually, not so much a test as exercising the generator. If an engine stands too long without being used, it might not start when you need it.

Back when I worked for an ice rink, the timer that ran the exercise cycle on the generator died on us, and by the time anybody noticed it, the generator needed to be fixed. By guess who. You haven't lived until you've had to replace the starter on a generator that's surrounded by brick walls.
