What do people think of the concept of creating a UDF (like lpad) and
putting it in a library available to all applications?
This would give you compatibility with other databases but might have
operational differences if IBM adds that function to their database.

Can you throw the same sql exception that an error with lpad would receive
in the other database? Like SQLSTT or SQLCOD?
