Actually I really don't think this is true these days. Heck I was often
threatened with firing for not toeing the IBM line - and that's when I
worked for them. Connie Wiles has done a very good job of collecting
speakers who know their stuff and tell people what they need to know - not
just what the powers-that-be want them to hear.

All of the events including your own NES (for example) have their own flavor
and different events suit different people.
