You cannot do that thru IBM, because they cannot directly sell you a v#r# that is no longer sold or supported.
You can do it thru 3rd party places like www.servit.net

The maximum OS/400 supported by 170 is v5r3
Depending on your data & applications, if you wanted to continue upwards, you would then need to "port" your stuff from 170 to some other box, go up the V#rR# ladder but hey, there is no box now on the IBM market that supports both the topmost 170 supported V#R# and the bottom most currently supported combination.

So you copy your 170 stuff to some other box, upgrade V#R#, copy to some other box, upgrade V#R#, again, again, until you get to where you want to be.
This needs help from a Business Partner that is competent in this area, has access to the older machines path.

hello,

we have an older 170 v4r5 that we want to upgrade to v5r1 or later. Is this still possible? I see on the IBM site support is gone for v4r5 and I don't see anything on the IBM site for planning for this type of upgrade.

thanks,

george
