Hi,

%NULLIND is not only to determine a NULL-Value but also to set one.

If you want to change a NULL value, you first have to set *OFF the
appropriate NULL-Indicator (%NullInd).
After the NULL-Indicator is set *OFF it is possible to change the field
value.

On the other hand if you want to update a field with a NULL Value, you
simply have to set *ON the appropriate NULL-Indicator.

There is also a chapter (9.xx) in the following Redbook, about how to handle
NULL values in either RPG or SQL:

Yeah, and that would tell me if it had a null value, but I'm wondering why I
can't update the fields.

Subject: Can't RPG Update a NULL Field?
Riddle me this...I was trying to update a record using the RPG UPDATE
opcode. I first tried the %Fields parm (which I usually use), and the
fields weren't being updated. So I took off the %Fields - no change. I
had specified H AlwNull(*UsrCtl), which I thought would allow me to do
as I pleased with a null field. It wasn't until is set the fields that
I was trying to update to their default values (zeros, blanks) that I
was able to programmatically update the fields that contained a null.
Is this WAD or am I missing something? Thanks...
