All,

I'm trying to figure out what the SQL construct would be for retrieving
the value for a column (or columns) after an insert. There are three
cases where you may not know the value when you issue the insert, but
want the value after the insert. First, and most obvious perhaps, is an
identity (auto-number) situation, but also in the case of default values
on columns where the column value isn't provided in the insert, and
columns where the value is determined (or changed) by a trigger.

Obviously issuing a "select * from" after the insert would accomplish
the result, but I want to make sure that I'm not missing a simpler
construct. For example, SQLServer has the "output" clause you can use on
a insert for specifically this purpose. Not that it should matter, but
the call will be made from .Net code via the IBM provider.

Any ideas?
