I will only comment on what has been announced.

You do install VIOS on the first partition of each blade, and then VIOS
accesses the disks in your SAN, CD from the media tray, and Ethernet ports
from the IVM. VIOS pretty much provides the logical interface between the
other partitions of the blade and the hardware. A bunch of us that are
regulars on this list had the pleasure of implementing this last week in
Rochester (V6R1 on a Power-6 Blade as was announced in end of Jan), and
those blades are mighty fast. Once you get the blade and the storage setup,
it's a D-Mode IPL to load the I_Base_01 CD and you are going.

I'm not an expert by any stretch but isn't the $15,000k on the JS22 per
core? The first core is for VIOS, and the remaining 3 can be used for
any OS. With all 3 cores activated I think your JS22 CPW is 11,900 but
with only one it would be something in the range of 4,000 and the 525 is
7100.

I may be all wet but I would double check the software costs. You would
assume that for a few days you will be comparing the JS22 vs. the 525
P5+ systems.

As a whole you would expect a more affordable CPW cost scenario with the
P6 system.

Subject: js22 vs i525

what is the downside of choosing a JS22 over an i525? The JS22 has a
PowerPC 6 processor vs the 5+ on the i525. The JS22 will be faster than
the
i525? By my calcs, the JS22 system will cost $80K. the i525 config I
am
reading has a price of $258,000. Will the overall performance of the
i525
be better than the JS22?

new i525 config:
- 0595 pci-x tower unit 4x $31,980
- 2844 pci iop 6x $12,600
- 4326 35GB drives. 46x $55,154
- 4475 4GB DDR2 memory. 4x $11,124
- 5591 2757 controller w/aux write cache. 3x $20,985
- 7792 express config 1x $79,900
total price $258,000
