You need an entry for the System i in the HOST table for SMTP to start on the System i.

There is a host-table entry for the system name as reported in the sign-on screen, on both the customer box and our box. On our box, it points to the loopback IP address. On theirs, it points to one of several IP addresses apparently assigned to the box.
