Built like battleships would have been expensive as the original 5251 Mod 11, or 5292. Weren't those a few thousand dollars - 20 years ago? The 3196 was a piece of garbage that the power switches broke a lot. Replaced several of those.

Probably a good guess on the 5251 price. The 5292 was even more. Falling PC prices killed off the "highend" terminal market.

IBM's ultimate terminal of the 80's was the 3290 (mainframe 3270 coax). It had a plasma screen and was capable of displaying 4 sessions simultaneously. IIRC, the price was closer to $10K.
