We ran into a variation of this when we had Machine/36 hosted by OS/400.
The reality was & probably still is, that objects on one operating system are entirely foreign to objects on another operating system, so what you could get was a backup of the ENTIRE system, like a SAVE-21.
You could not get partial backups, you could not get partial restores.

So example ... we discover that a person was deleting query definitions that they created and no longer using ... come to find out SOMEONE ELSE was using those queries & wanted them back. In the current reality, we go to the last backup tape, before the deletions, and restore ONLY certain query definitions.

If one operating system stuff has been backed up using some other operating system, the other operating system thinks of the backed up stuff as a single object ... you cannot address the pieces in terms known to the OS that got backed up.

You need to plan your backup strategey to support access to pieces, perhaps both the backup in total, and key pieces in save files, if you have enough disk space, and a good naming system.

We're looking into ways to consolidate/automate our backup strategies.
Right now we have two separate operations, one for the windows servers/SAN
to a tape library device and a second operation for our i5/520 (V5R4) where
we backup libraries to a separate LTO3 single tape device.

The vendors we've talked to do not have interfaces that could "pull" from
the i5. So we're wondering if anyone has pushed backups from IBM onto a
windows SAN for capture to tape and if it would be possible to restore from
such a device?
