The examples you point out are exactly what I'm talking about.

In order to make the sale on the hardware, you then have to
sell the "service" provider of the software.

I didn't mean to imply that open source wasn't just as good,
just that it would be a much different way of selling the solution.

I have seen and used open source. It requires a different method
of selling to be a success. I must admit that I have never tried to
sell an open source solution but I'm always open to any success
stories others have had.
