So, I take it that using winzip and seeing if that unzips it is not an
option?
And, if that does unzip it, then use one of the myriad of programs out
there that can unzip the same files that WinZip can unzip won't be an
option either?

Don't knock zipping. I've zipped multiple MB files down to a few KB's,
thus saving a lot in disk space and, getting past file size limitations on
various ftp and email servers.
