  Elvis & Charles already clarified separately so this is mostly 
redundant... for the archive to clarify my specific example.

  I should have clarified in my original response, that to /omit/ the 
columns required the /specify column list for insert/ as shown in the 
code example that was given:

 insert into tofile (a, b)    -- specify column list for insert
  (select F.* from fromfile F -- F.* is column list (a, b)
   where ... )

  In that example, the /tofile/ table has four columns, two more than 
named in the column list (a,b) for the insert.  The full column list for 
the /tofile/ table is the four columns (a,b,createdby,createdat).  Since 
only the first two fields (a,b) are named on the insert, the last two 
fields (createdby,createdat) are therefore /omitted on the insert/.
