Does suspend power off, but leave everything saved, right where you

were?

Nope, that's hibernate. Suspend is a (extremely)low power mode, but the
machine is still on, nothing is "saved." If you pull the battery you'll
crash your laptop. Of course it takes less to come back from suspend
than from hibernate, and unless you have a really long commute or really
bad battery suspend would survive the commute w/out a problem. Actually
I've had my laptop suspended overnight w/out a problem many times.
