I have to agree with Joe on this one.  Professionalism should rule.
In this particular situation, a newbie might decide the issue of 
suppressing status messages has to do with "messages", not "users", and 
therefore do all their research under "messages".  A search of user 
profile options might not even cross his/her mind.
And I'm not saying that people should not be told from time to time to 
'look it up yourself'.  I probably  have the highest ratio of "questions 
asked" vs "answers provided" of anyone on this list.  I try to find 
answers first.  Sometimes search results don't quite address some nuance 
in the question.
I enjoy being a single-person shop because I don't have to answer to 
anyone.  But the bane of it is, when I'm stuck, I'm stuck.  There's no 
one else here to ask.  midrange.com is a lifesaver for me.
