From the 'IBM System/38 Technical Developments' manual from the 
General Systems Division in 1978(!!), the article entitled 
'System/38 machine indexing support':

"In addition to being integrated into the machine, the System/38 
index support has an advanced implementation approach utilizing a 
binary radix tree structure with special considerations for paging."

A number of other references are in the article, but one sub-topic 
is 'Binary radix tree'. It provides basic descriptions of how things 
work at a conceptual level.

1978(!!) -- it's been referenced for some time by IBM in available 
pubs. Who knows how meaningful the references are?
