Putting it in a PGP encrypted file would be a great way to handle it.
In most cases, even a simpler self decrypting archive would probably be
enough protection to be reasonable.

I'm not aware of any "standards" (though there may be some) other than
common sense. Members of these lists frequently say something along the
lines of "I posted this three days ago and it never showed up in my inbox."
Where did it go? Who knows? Plus Microsoft ain't a trailblazer in
security.
IF you used something like PGP, that might be another story, but you said
it was clear text.
Call 'em on the phone - but make sure it's on a scrambled line. .-)
