Al,
When I need to do something like this, I use one of two methods:

1.) Get the file from the other company in a pipe ( | ) delimited text
file, and save it to a folder on the IFS. Then use     
    CPYFRMIMPF to import it to a file on the AS/400.

2.) If you have to use the excel sheet, try this:

    A.) Have the user delete all headings, total lines and unwanted
columns. Also remove all cell formatting.

    B.) Save the resulting file to a folder on the IFS as a .CSV and use
CPYFRMIMPF to import it to a file on the
        AS/400.

I have heard that there is a way to use POI to read the sheet and pull
out what you want, but I have never tried that. However, I did find this
