There is application software that still does this. Infor's BPCS for one.
Even though their latest releases went through some major updates, like
changing the size of the item master field that would use as a key, they
still do not key their PFs. They do that via LF's. However their LF's do
not specify UNIQUE and if you do any updating outside of their software
(who doesn't? You DO have to migrate data, etc) it is possible to get
duplicate item numbers in the item master.
