Yes, I would prefer DDL over DDS also, however:
1 - You can use varying length fields in DDS.
2 - DDS does edit on write on newer data types, such as date and time
fields. It does not edit on write on older types like packed data for
fear of breaking existing code. I am sure there's a shop or two out there
somewhere that has a vendor supplied file with a packed numeric in it that
they aren't using as the vendor intended but are storing some other
character data in there instead.
