You haven't said Why you want to do this (i.e., variable HL/RI).
Just a wag here, but maybe you have a composite field for which you
want to indicate the portion(s) that may be in error or otherwise
unacceptable. If so (or something similar), since it isn't possible
to HL/RI part of a field (without intervening spaces), you might
display a second field under the first that uses asterisks to mark
the portion of the field that you want to HL/RI.
For example, if the field = 'ABCDEF; and you want to highlight 'CD',
you might display:
Field: ABCDEF
**
Anyway, I've done that sort of thing in the past for the situation
I've described. (Dashes also work as far as making a user aware of
the situation.) Of course, if the panel is chock full of stuff or
this is a subfile, that's another issue.

Alan -
As James mentioned, the attribute hex codes take up space, so your
listwill need to be longer than 40 bytes.the
Also be aware that if this is an input-capable field, that:
1) As soon as someone types over the attribute value, the HI/RI will
disappear
2) The attribute values will be stored in the database field along with
data, unless you parse it out first...list
