Glad to see you're going.
Back when I was an AS/400 newbie (and apparently so was my local CE) I had
EDI comm down for 3 days because the resource names got all reassigned
when a card was put in.  I didn't know jack about this.  My choices were
to do what you did or to STRSST the resources to match their old names.  I
did the former.  Nowadays I often do the latter.  Kind of funny to see a
resources named
TAP02OLD
CMNWTF
Sure catches the CE's eye.

ok, I think I'm making progress:

I renamed the MLB to TAPMLB03 (because they reassigned all the tapes
to that name in BRMS when they replaced the unit)  I don't like it but
if it works, I can live with it.

here are the device descriptions.  the hardware resource is still
named TAPMLB02.

Device description . . . . . . . . :   TAPMLB03
Option . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :   *BASIC
Category of device . . . . . . . . :   *MLB

Device class . . . . . . . . . . . :   *TAP
Resource name  . . . . . . . . . . :   TAPMLB02
Device type  . . . . . . . . . . . :   3582
Device model . . . . . . . . . . . :   001
---
Device description . . . . . . . . :   TAP02

Device type  . . . . . . . . . . . :   3580
Device model . . . . . . . . . . . :   002
Resource name  . . . . . . . . . . :   TAP02
Online at IPL  . . . . . . . . . . :   *YES

and I then successfully saved a file using SAVOBJBRM.

I'm going to try a scheduled daily incremental and see if that works now.

Thanks for everyone's help!
