I always did my own soldering and supervised the cable runs. I never messed
with baluns because when I was working in twin-ax shops they were not
"mature" products.

Everything was daisy chained together. I had enough bad experiences with
3196's at COMMON that I never owned any.

Twinax always works? Evidently you've not spent a lot of time upgrading
baluns, twinax repeaters, etc trying to find out what was going wrong.
Boss: They have all this equipment like repeaters and stuff to make it
work.
Me: Because there's a MARKET for it. It takes all that stuff to get it
to work.
Or calling the IBM repairman to replace a plethora of 3196 switches.
Or having one pin pushed in when you screwed in the cable.
Or ...
