Regardless of the news of talks, I have a hard time seeing SUN selling out to IBM, so I have an even harder time speculating about how the acquisition might effect IBM i or any other part of IBM.

Obviously it would be in IBM's interests to eliminate a competitor and gain a bigger market share. But I don't see the acquisition being in most folks interests. Open-source idealists and communities would be hardest hit. I can see IBM giving lip service to them but putting most of their efforts into proprietary versions of Java, Java Application Servers, and MySQL.

An IBM acquisition of Zend seems more realistic to me than SUN, but AFAIK IBM and Zend are not even talking about that.

Nathan.
