A MySQL inventor blogged about Oracle's acquisition:

Some are saying there have been 12 million downloads of MySQL. Others are saying that it's ready for mission critical applications.

Ultimately, commercialization seems to be the design and fate of successful open-source projects. Gain wide-spread acceptance - then commercialize. Change the license terms, or something like that.
