Issue resolved:

CPYFRMSTMF FROMSTMF(&PATH)
TOMBR('/QSYS.LIB/QTEMP.LIB/TEMPFILE.FILE/TEMPFILE.MBR')
MBROPT(*REPLACE) CVTDTA(*AUTO) ENDLINFMT(*CRLF) TABEXPN(*NO)

The key parameters here are CVTDTA(*AUTO) (recommended by Charles Wilt)
and adding the ENDLINFMT(*CRLF). Now the DB file has the data in the way
I wanted it.
