Chuck Pence explained the issue, but in case you missed it....

PDM validates the object you've entered an option next to, even if for
example the action is a user action like 'DM' for Display Messages that
doesn't effect the object.

Strange perhaps, but working as designed...

Right. I understand that part and figured that was the case in the
first place, but it doesn't explain why it only happens sometimes and
not every time.
