One of the possible downsides of accessing the iSeries DB2 database would be
that if you need to do any maintenance on the iSeries you impact the Web
customer view. Might not be a big issue but just a thought.

I'm with Scott on this one.
You can set up views that mimic the MS SQL server tables/views
complete with long names, so that the web app will require little if
any modification. You could even set up those views in a schema named
like the one on MS SQL server.
I've yet to see a "home grown" replication system that worked 100%
reliably. It's just never as simple as it looks. There's a reason
you'd spend big $$$ to purchase a vendor's replication package.
