I've deployed quite a few 1 Core Power 6 machines with 4GB
of memory and just two arms. They're awfully slow, and i wouldn't
want to work on them on a daily basis.
Is the "machine" slow?

The machine is, from an objective standpoint, featuring hardware that
will archive sub-par performance at best.

Or are the "applications" slow?

The applications _i_ use most are awfully slow (System i Navigator,
Service Agent, Web Query, Administrative HTTP Server). Most customers
get better performance on the new machine than old the old using their
business apps. So they see an improvement compared to their 7.5 year
old P.O.S.

I think that's a valid question because performance is largely based on software - not just the number of cores, the amount of RAM, disk arms, and processor speed. Does the application architecture perform well, or not?

The IBM supplied software on the IBM supplied hardware is slow. Our
software on the IBM supplied hardware performs reasonably, it could be
a lot better if IBM would sell their hardware at reasonable prices.
