You could define your own file with the fields you need in a format that 
will be acceptable at both releases.  then you could use SQL (or a 
similar tool) to copy the fields from the *OUTFILE to your own file. 
Then you could read your own file.

Or you could just use the APIs -- which is a much better solution, IMHO.
