This is why it is NOT a best practice. Let's say you do regular updates,
as you said. What WILL (repeat, WILL not MIGHT) happen is that at some
time your FSP will get to a firmware high enough that your HMC will no
longer work with it. Unless you keep up with your HMC updates as well.

So, now you swear upon your ancestors that you will religiously update
your HMC. Along comes your CEO and says "Congrats, you are now my VP of
Administration". You have so much to pass on before you start jetting
around the globe to handle mergers and acquisitions so reminding your
replacement in IT to upgrade the HMC slips through the crack. Your IT
replacement comes from a shop that has never seen a HMC. A year or two
goes by. You try to access your companies internal web site to check
sales projections and get into your Domino i based email and neither
works. Now you call IT and find out that there was a power outage and
they can't bring up the system because the HMC doesn't work with the
version of FSP installed. You ask "what clown did that"? Reply: "You
did".
