I can think of plenty.
For most people, they should go directly from V5R4 to 7.1, but there are
some customers that can't get to 7.1 directly, and will need to stop at 6.1.
Of course, the obvious is the hardware doesn't support 7.1 is an issue, but
that always needs to be validated. The other is compatibility of other
products. For instance, if your application uses the Java 1.5 SDK, then you
can't go to 7.1 as that SDK is not supported. Perhaps you can just change
your environment information for that application in QShell and point it to
5.0. Whatever, you need to check that out. Also, if you are running
Websphere 6.0 (or earlier), then that isn't supported on 7.1. There are
statements in that websphere config that need to be changed, and the 6.0
doesn't have the right modules to load (6.1 does). You would need to upgrade
first to Websphere 6.1, and then you can run on IBM i 7.1. If you are
running various releases of Notes/Domino, there are release support issues
with some of the 7.x releases (having to do with which JDK that domino
uses), and you would need to get to a higher release before upgrading to IBM
i 7.1. You should always check with your application vendors, but the pain
was getting to 6.1.
Once you are on 6.1, then the upgrade to 7.1 is a piece of cake. As in all
upgrades you need to check the pre-requisites, plan, plan, and insure you
have done your planning.

I can't think of a good reason to stop at V6R1 on your way to 7.1.
There is just not that much there. I get the impression that 6.1 was
the plumbing and piping release and 7.1 is where they released all the
functionality that depended on the 6.1 plumbing.
