Guess I was still in the phyical tape mode. I know you have to inz tape
befor reusing it. But not sure if virtual tape needed to be also. We
will (for now) use the save virtual tape description for the daily
saves. This is all new to me.
Thanks again for all the help,
William

Depends. One, on what your definition of "clear" is. Two, what
expiration date you gave on the save.
If you specified your save as permanent, then you may have to INZTAP the
virtual tape. But if your definition of clear is removing all the image
catalog entries, then, no, you shouldn't have to do that.

Unless it tells you it needs a cleaning tape. JUST KIDDING!!!! :-)

Since moving to managed tape with BRMS we never use *PERM on any saves
anymore. Never.

We also use separate volume id's for all physical tape media. This is
pretty much required for BRMS. We started it before then because of
tape libraries and having multiple tapes in the library. You don't put
duplicate volume ids in the same library. Actually we started it before
libraries because PRTERRLOG TYPE(*VOLSTAT) VOLTYPE(3590) will tell you
the volume id's of all tapes reporting errors and recommend some to be
replaced. Which brings up a point. When you do a DUPTAP if you use
TOVOL(*FROMVOL) and your virtual tape volume is always the same then
your physical volumes will always be the same and PRTERRLOG will be
tough to decipher. (note: even though we're using lto3 we still say
VOLTYPE(3590)
- it works).

That's it.
Do I have to clear the virtual tape image before running it again?

Thanks,
That did it. Was able to save to virtual tape and restore.
How do I save the virtual file to tape?
William

Tommy,
Sorry took me so long to response back. I wanted to call 'savlib' from
CL.
When do I find opt6?
Thanks,
William

Did you take option 6 on the entry to *mount* the tape prior to trying
to save to the drive?

I have created a virtual tape on our Iseries for nightly saves.
When I run the following command, I get an error.

"SAVLIB LIB(WJMWORK) DEV(TAPVRT01) "
Device TAPVRT01 was not ready or next volume was not loaded. (C R)

This is how I added the new image catalog entry:
ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(TAPVRTSAVE) FROMFILE(*new) TOFILE(vol001)
IMGSIZ(10000) TEXT('Add Image Catalog Entry') ALCSTG(*IMGSIZ)
VOLNAM(VOL001) VOLTYP(*SL)
DENSITY(*VRT256K)

Image catalog entry added to image catalog TAPVRTSAVE.

I have made sure that tapvrt01 is varied on.

Any suggestion on what I might have done wrong or ideal would be greatly
appreciated.
