Answer to question two: Yes, users do expect that. those IT people seem to pull rabbits out of hats all day.

Question one:
Most of the time, if they can review backwards, they don't find the relevant information.
In this case, consider yourself lucky.
"I got a error message" maybe all we get on a help desk ticket.
