I think (but don't hold me to this) that there were some APIs at V5R4 for
encryption/decryption. The Redbook may cover those as it written for
"i5/OS" which was V5R3 and V5R4 (temporarily, of course!).

Sorry I worded this ambiguously.
To clarify:
Anything native on the Iseries without requiring add-ins?
I would especially like to see some SQL ideas.
We are running V5r4.

First, maybe it's just me, but I don't consider SQL an add-in. Now, if
you're talking about DB2 Query Mgr and SQL DevKit, that might be different.
Second, what release are you on? I'm still stuck on V5R1, but I recall
reading that at either 6.1 or 7.1 field encryption was available. Can't
recall what it took.
Third, you can roll your own. I've done that before, but it is not even
close to what the system does.
Finally, there is a Redbook
(
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg247399.pdf) on the subject.

Is there a simple method to encrypt one field in a file - the file is no
longer used in production.
I know - just clear it. We probably will clear it, but Id like to learn
anyways.
Anything native on the Iseries without any add-ins - especially SQL?
Thanks
