A word of caution:

Unlike what we're used to on IBM i, GNU C Compiler (GCC) versions are 
not necessarily backward-compatible.  So there may be software that 
compiles/works with 4.0.0 (for example) but does not work with 4.6.2.

Most of the time these are unusual quirks that have changed -- but 
sometimes it's actually something major.

So please make sure you're using a GCC version that's compatible with 
what you're compiling.  Or, better yet, if you're not planning to change 
the source anyway, try to get a precompiled copy of the program you want 
to run.
