Until last quarter (which is how often I do a Save 21) the entire save fit
on a single tape. Last quarter it rolled over to a second tape.
I have marked the tape a "Trash," and it is sitting on my desk right now.
I'm thinking of dismantling it and running the tape out. At which point a
fire or cross-cutting with some magnetized scissors might satisfy the
paranoid amongst us here (i.e., me).

1 - I would question any CLEAR(*YES) that finished in 5 minutes. Unless you
can fit your system on a 'test' tape.
2 - I tried a .50 caliber muzzleloader (round ball) edge wise on a
reel-to-reel tape. Minimal (almost nonexistant) penetration. Tightly wound
tape media is tough. Did sling that reel quite a ways though. There are
more effective methods which will not make a mess out of your shooting
range. Most of our data isn't exactly curtains for the free world if the
data gets out. But also keep in mind how dedicated certain people are.
During the heyday of the Carter administration (heyday + Carter =
oxymoron) the dedicated over in Tehran took the paper shreddings from the
embassy and put them back together like you would a jigsaw puzzle. Hence
why we have smaller, cross cutting shredding machines now for more sensitive
work.

I was expecting it to take quite awhile, too, Jim, but it only took about
five [5] minutes. I will give serious consideration to your suggestion to
take out my frustration and latent aggressive tendencies. .-)

That may take awhile to finish, and not go past the write failure point.
Alternatively, a sledge hammer, or shotgun, or other mode of physical
destruction will allow you to destroy the tape and take out some
aggression
at an inanimate object in the bargain! A fire works well too......

I use *DLT per an earlier suggestion you posted here some years ago.
Right now I'm re-initializing said tape with CLEAR(*YES) so that I can

It depends. Do you use VOLSTAT(*DLT or *KEEP)? If you're using *DLT
and you're getting that many errors on a weekly basis - nuke it. But
if you use one tape (foolish) every night for the last 15 years and
you're using *KEEP, your opinion may differ.
I'm also guessing, since you're running V5R1, that your tape drive
isn't exactly 'leading edge'. IOW, used tapes for that should be a
dime a dozen (figuratively). Just replace them.
