An example from graphic design: when people start out inserting metal foundry type into a composing stick, their typography tends to be very solid, craftsmanlike, and reader-friendly regardless of the technology they use. But when they start out on PageFaker (or worse, designing web pages), without any hands-on understanding of the past 550 years of the printed word, they tend to repeat lots of very old mistakes, and produce documents that look very slick, but very banal, and not especially reader-friendly.
