Would you have a copy of the presentation that you could share.

At the recent CAAC meeting we had a presentation on PureSystems. I have
to admit to confusion about this offering, and I'm not sure IBM presents
it in a way that is helpful to AS/400 people - or even IBM i people!
(Heh, couldn't resist!)

The conclusion we came to is like yours - if you are essentially and IBM
i shop, forget about the PureFlex. Wth VIOS and all you can do the SAN
stuff already with just a 720 or 740.

If you have different OS's and want the advantage of the centralized
administration of FSM - Flex System Management - then PureFlex might be
your ticket.

Now the full Systems Director product has almost everything that FSM
has, and can probably be all you need - again without some of the
centralized facilities, like automatic updates, as I recall - I don't
have more details, sorry.

First rule: Pure Flex uses "Compute Nodes" not those 'blade' thinks, no
no no. :-)

PureFlex includes a V7000 SAN for storage.

PureFlex comes as a full rack that includes all the infrastructure
stuff. This includes fiber switches, power supplies, cooling fans,
V7000, the Flex service module.

A 740 contains its own power supplies and cooling and I think if you
don't intend to use PureFlex for Intel based workloads you'll find the
740 as a MUCH cheaper solution. Can I ask what pushes you to a 740 if
you only need 4 cores and intend to use SAN for storage? Would a 720 do
the job??

P.S. unlikely too many AS/400 people can do a fair comparison of Power
System and PureFlex. :-)

So, after many year I might have convinced management to upgrade our
aging Power 5 550 machine. I initally was looking at a four core 740, with
two cores for i OS and two to support older AIX workloads. In the end, it
looks like it might only be i OS on Power running on two Power cores. With
some other projects going on in the division, the PureFlex system is being
thrown out as another option. This configuration would have three or four
x86 blades and one Power blade running two cores. The politics of the
situation has me possibly axeing the x 86 blades and looking at a PureFlex
system only with one Power blade. So, I guess what I'm looking for is some
feedback on a 740 with 2 cores or a PureFlex blade with 2 cores. Both
solutions would most likely be using DASD out of our V7000 system. I
haven't seen any configs yet so I can't answer part numbers, memory, etc
but I guess I'm looking for an AS/400/iSeries/system I person who might
know more about the comparision o

hese two implementations.

Thanks,

Mike.
