I agree, the interface is just too slick to not use it. I just submitted a DCR to see if IBM might enhance it to support SMTP user authentication and SSL encryption via the following suggested configuration variables:

DTW_SMTP_USER (SMTP user authentication)
DTW_SMTP_PASSWORD (SMTP user authentication)
DTW_SMTP_PORT (support ports other than 25)
DTW_SMTP_PROTOCOL (support SMTPS (SSL) protocol)

That would be nice. We'll see.
