I don't use it today, but did while I was VP-CIO. We used active energy manager and a couple of the other tools (the smart PDUs) to monitor the data center and cut our energy usage by over 60%, and several ton's of carbon footprint. That made the Board of Directors happy. (They did not care that we also cut the cost of running the data center, only the "environmental impact")

The ambient temperature in the data center was 75 degrees when we were done. Since all the equipment was reporting in within temperature specifications (even the HP Servers we had) we were able to push the temperature up to a nice warm spot. No more sweaters in the data center while you were working there.....

Jim,

10-4, thanks for the confirmation.....are you using Director to monitor your IBM i? If so, do you find Director's monitoring features comparable to typical IBM i 3rd party packages?

Brad,

Sorry I misunderstood, I have loaded Director on VMs many times. The only problem is if the system the VM is running on or the VM itself has an issue, then the Director software clearly cannot report that.

My point was....are there any requirements that would prohibit the Systems Director software stack from being installed on a VM? I wouldn't think so, but cannot seem to find any specific verbiage on Director infrastructure requirements.

Real-time infrastructure monitoring is the concern and Dawn did make a good suggestion for Systems Director. SDMC required the appliance if you were using anything bigger than a 740 I think....just hope those same restrictions do not apply to Systems Director as well because using a VM would be preferred in my environment (I realize the two products are not the same). I have some Systems Director decks from the 2012 Technical University so I need to look that over.

Systems Director has some nice functions but it's also another independent system/VM to maintain. Perhaps I will change my tune once I familiarize myself with the new IBM i monitoring enhancements for Director.......
