I've recently inherited a couple V6R1 LPARs that I'm trying to get up to speed on configurations, etc. In doing so, I realize that they are running V6.1, which is going to roll off support this year so I'm looking into upgrading to WebSphere V8.5. I've also have been trying to understand the licensing.

I've been searching for a good explanation between the two and have not found anything.

So I have an older V5R4 LPAR that when I look at GO LICPGM, I see:
5722E51 *INSTALLED WebSphere Application Server - Express 5.1

As I understand it, this is the WebSphere that came with V5R4. While I don't use it, it's there and is included with the SWMA I pay for the machine.
As for the inherited V6R1 LPARs that have :
5733W61 *INSTALLED WebSphere Application Server V6.1 for i5/OS
5733W61 *INSTALLED WebSphere Application Server V6.1 ("Base")

I do not see the E51 product installed.
First question is: did they get rid of the Express version and when I upgrade V5R4 to V6R1, E51 will become W61?

So, after some searching I found : http://www-01.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/wasfamily/compare.html

I noticed first off a the top under "Optimized for", I see express "Low cost ready to go solution for smaller scale deployments of dynamic web applications" and under Application Server, essentially for moderately sized deployments. When I look through the comparison chart though, I see they are the same with the exception of "Socket based pricing and "Tool Edition".. doesn't sound like that tells me what you really get for standard version.

I'm wonder why someone would not use Express and cough up money for the Application Server version.

As far as licensing goes, I'm running on an Power 5 550 (three processors). The V5R4 machine was moved over from an 810. I believe with both of these model, you licensed software for the whole machine. At that time, I'm guessing someone decided to put a good chunk of change down for the Application Server because the Express wasn't going to cut it.

I guess going forward, V7r1 or whatever, thoughts about converting Application server to Express?

Also, any comments on my WAS upgrade? I started looking at coexistence of V6R1 and V8R5 but was wondering is most people just upgrade right over the top? I have four LPARs; Dvlp, Test, QA and Prod for this application. It might be a lot of extra work to do the coexistence.
