could those "other requests" be legit activity by google/bing ?

Different people will have different opinions about what they consider to be legit. But yes, once you offer an HTTP service on port 80, it doesn't seem to take long before google, bing, and other web crawlers begin interrogating your web site, looking for new and updated content.
