We just recently upgraded to a Power 8. Plenty of disk and horsepower.
We're actually going to remove some workload because IBM can't give us any
references on how to get THEIR software working on IBM i so it's being
migrated to wintel hell.
My boss (who loves IBM and IBM i) asked me if we wanted to migrate any
Domino archive data to 'cheaper hardware'. First I started laughing
hysterically until I realized he was serious. I reminded him that some
years ago we started out with two clustered Domino archive servers. One
on Wintel, one on x86 Linux. The users hung us in effigy since the access
was so slow. We quickly moved it back to IBM i. Granted, there's a huge
difference between single disk PC servers and our current PC servers
running off of a current SAN.
I said it makes no sense at this stage since we have plenty of horsepower
and disk and are actually removing load. He concurs, for now. But, if
disk starts getting tight, that will be the first to walk the plank.
