An alternative may be to start thinking about a High Availability
solution. We use one to replicate all of data to another machine (you
could use an lpar in your case). We do all of our backup's on that lpar.
Really. The primaries only touch tape once a quarter. We do a role swap
and back up the primaries then. We use Mimix but there's a bazillion
competitors to it also.
This technique is quite common. We saw a local company doing it using
Mimix at our LUG. We were already using Mimix so it seemed like a good
idea to incorporate this, and BRMS, at the same time. No user
interruption during nightly backups. No half baked backups using ragged
save while active.
